How we made the most
of B Corp Month 2024
(and what we’d do differently next time)
March 2024 was our first B Corp Month as a certified B Corp. Unsurprisingly, we decided to dive in head first – with a couple of ideas, the help of over 30 B Corp brands we’d never previously met, and absolutely no idea how things would unfold. On reflection, it’s safe to say our experience this month epitomised everything B Corp stands for: community, collaboration, support and growth.
The first big idea arrived back at the beginning of January, when our founder Katie asked a simple question: “What if we invited people from B Corp brands to answer some of the most frequently asked B Corp questions?” A quick search later and we had a list of 25 questions, a name for the series – Unwrapped – and all the skills, technology and enthusiasm we needed to begin. We recognised early on that it was key to simplify and automate as much of the booking and recording process as possible. By setting up an automated invitation and calendar booking system, all we needed to do was share a three-page deck in the B Hive. One post later and we were oversubscribed – with people from B Corp brands volunteering their time and expertise before we’d even caught our breath.
Using a standard script for all recordings, we carried out almost all of them in the latter half of February using our Riverside online recording studio. From 1st March we published one video a day on our website and YouTube channel – answering everything from “How long does B Corp certification take?” to “What mistakes did you make in your certification journey?”. That final video, shared on 31st March, featured answers from all 25 brands that took part – and it remains one of our favourite things we’ve ever made.
To say we were overwhelmed at the response is an understatement. Although, on reflection, perhaps we shouldn’t have been surprised. That’s the B Corp community. And it’s also, we think, the beauty of being a small creative business: when we believe in something, there’s very little that gets in the way of us making it happen.
In a moment of curiosity one Friday afternoon in February, we asked ourselves: “What if we put on a B Corp Month breakfast panel, to help more local businesses understand and connect with the B Corp community?” We’d never run an event before. TMC Communications kindly offered us The Space as our venue, and after a few emails, Slack messages and phone calls, we had assembled a panel including Laura Keay from The Fine Bedding Company, Steph Woodhouse from Emma Bridgewater, Paul Hornby from Foilco and Joe Onions from Sherrington Associates.
We settled on a Graham Norton-style conversation format – informal, warm, and a little less boozy (though considerably more cakey). There was a huge range of people in our audience of 35, from those who’d never heard of B Corp to those who’d come from other certified brands. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive – and every one of our speakers volunteered to do it again. That, for us, was the most unexpected and wonderful outcome of the whole month.
If we were to do B Corp Month again – and we absolutely will – we’d start sooner. All recordings completed by the end of January, everything edited by the end of February. That would free up the whole of March to focus on sharing and amplifying, rather than chasing our tails in the edit. We also saw clearly that the brands who helped promote their own answers saw significantly more engagement. Having micro-clips ready from the start – available to all participants immediately – would make a real difference.
For the live event, we’d simply extend the timings. Our audience told us they wanted longer: more conversation, more questions, more time to connect. That’s a good problem to have.
Absolutely. We’ll just start planning it all much earlier. The Unwrapped series will remain a genuinely useful resource for anyone exploring B Corp certification – Google is already surfacing the videos in search results, and the questions the series answers don’t have an expiry date. If you’re curious about what B Corp certification involves, or you’re already on the journey, we’d encourage you to explore the full series on our YouTube channel.
We’re eternally grateful to every person who said yes – who gave their time, their honesty, and their enthusiasm to something that didn’t yet exist. That generosity is what B Corp stands for. And it’s what we hope every piece of work we make stands for too. If B Corp Month 2024 taught us anything, it’s that the best things start with a simple question and a willingness to find out what happens next.
“Everyone enjoyed this event and the opportunity to connect so much that all four speakers volunteered to host the next one. That was the most unexpected outcome of the whole month.”
